About Wigton, Cumbria
Wigton is a market town in the Allerdale district of Cumbria, situated in the flat Solway Plain between Carlisle and the Solway Firth coast. The town has ancient origins — there is evidence of Roman activity in the surrounding area — and developed as a significant market and administrative centre for the surrounding agricultural communities during the medieval period.
Wigton is perhaps best known today as the birthplace of the broadcaster, author, and peer Melvyn Bragg, Baron Bragg. Lord Bragg has written warmly and extensively about Wigton in his novels and memoirs, portraying the town and its people with affection and insight. His novel 'The Soldier's Return' and its sequels are set in a thinly disguised version of Wigton and provide a vivid portrait of post-war Cumbrian life.
The High Street contains several fine Georgian buildings, reflecting Wigton's former prosperity as a coaching town on the road between Carlisle and Whitehaven. The town retains a strong community spirit and its weekly market, dating from a charter granted in 1262, continues to be central to local life.
Hoarding disorder and the need for house clearance affect people in every community across Cumbria — including Wigton. Whether you're dealing with a bereavement, a difficult tenancy, or a property that has simply accumulated too much over the years, our team brings the same professional, compassionate approach to every clearance we carry out.
