About Gretna, Dumfries and Galloway
Gretna and the adjacent Gretna Green are twin villages just across the Scottish border from Carlisle, celebrated throughout the world for their historic role as a destination for runaway marriages. Under Scottish law, marriage required only the declaration of consent before witnesses, without the parental consent required in England under Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753. This legal difference made Gretna Green — as the first village across the border — the obvious destination for eloping English couples.
The Old Blacksmith's Shop in Gretna Green became the most famous of the 'marriage houses', where the blacksmith or 'anvil priest' would conduct the ceremony over his anvil — giving rise to the lasting association between Gretna Green and the blacksmith's anvil as a symbol of marriage. Thousands of couples married here between 1753 and 1856, when Scottish law was changed to require 21 days' residence.
During the First World War, a vast munitions factory — His Majesty's Factory, Gretna — was established on the Solway plain between Gretna and Eastriggs. At its peak it was the largest munitions factory in the world, employing over 30,000 workers. The story of this extraordinary enterprise is told at the Devil's Porridge Museum in nearby Eastriggs. Today Gretna Green remains one of Scotland's most visited tourist destinations and a popular wedding venue.
