About Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway
Dumfries is the largest town in south-west Scotland and the administrative centre of Dumfries and Galloway. Situated on the east bank of the River Nith, the town has a history stretching back to at least the 12th century, when it was granted royal burgh status by William the Lion of Scotland. Its strategic position on the main route between England and Scotland gave it considerable importance throughout the medieval and early modern periods.
Robert the Bruce — Scotland's greatest hero king — is closely associated with Dumfries. In 1306, Bruce stabbed his rival John Comyn in the Greyfriars Church in Dumfries, an act that propelled him towards seizing the Scottish throne and beginning the Wars of Scottish Independence. His victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 secured Scottish independence and confirmed Bruce as one of history's great military leaders.
Dumfries is most celebrated as the home of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet. Burns moved to Dumfries in 1791 and lived in the town until his death in 1796 at the age of just 37. Burns House, where he spent his final years, is preserved as a museum, and the Robert Burns Centre on the banks of the Nith tells the full story of the poet's life and work. The town's Devorgilla Bridge — one of the oldest bridges in Scotland — has spanned the Nith since the 13th century.
